Archaeological evidence shows taht Singapore had a life before the coming of Stamford Raffles in 1819. Among the discoveries made by archaeologists were several gold ornaments, the remains of an ancient fort and fragments of stone with a writing system no one could make sense of the writing. Other objects were broken pieces of Chinese pottery and mercury pots.
